Trump's in trouble in a deep red state he desperately needs in 2020
Trump’s approval rating has plummeted in Georgia — a state he needs to win if he wants to be re-elected in 2020.
Voters in Georgia have completely soured on Trump more than two years after he took office, a fact that foreshadows bad news for the president ahead of the 2020 election.
More than half of Georgians — or 56 percent — now disapprove of the job Trump is doing as president, according to a poll released Friday by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Just 40 percent of Georgia voters say they approve of the job Trump is doing.
That’s a dismal number for a Republican in this heavily Republican state that Trump won in the 2016 presidential election.
Trump cannot afford to lose a state like Georgia if he hopes to be re-elected in 2020.
Republicans have carried the state in every presidential election since 1996. And without the state’s 16 Electoral College votes, it’s hard to see how Trump pulls out a victory in 2020.
Even more embarrassing for Trump is that he has bragged about his success in Georgia — which was one bright spot for Republicans in their dismal 2018 performance.
After Republican Brian Kemp won a hotly contested gubernatorial race against Democrat Stacey Abrams — after Kemp used voter suppression tactics — Trump bragged that Kemp won the state because of him.
“I won against President Obama and Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama in a great state called Georgia for the governor,” Trump said after Kemp’s win.
Trump also claimed that the race “was all stacked against” Kemp — despite the fact that Kemp controlled the election as secretary of state, and that Republicans have had the upper-hand in statewide elections here for decades. Kemp even faced calls to resign during the election thanks to his voter suppression tactics.
The 2020 election might be nearly two years away.
But the news of Trump’s unpopularity in a crucial state like Georgia is an ominous sign for him.
