Trump attacks woman accusing Kavanaugh of assault — like we all knew he would

It was only a matter of time before Trump started attacking Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who says Brett Kavanaugh tried to rape her in high school.

Trump’s team — including daughter and self-described advocate for women Ivanka Trump — ludicrously claimed Trump deserved credit for not attacking Ford all week.

But even the most casual of observers of Trump knew he wouldn’t be able to restrain himself forever. So less than a week after Ford came forward with her very graphic and very credible story of assault, Trump took to Twitter to trash her.

“I have no doubt that, if the attack on Dr. Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with local Law Enforcement Authorities by either her or her loving parents,” Trump said, showing off his embarrassing ignorance about sexual assault, since the overwhelming majority of sexual assaults are never reported to law enforcement.

Worse, Trump says Ford should “bring those filings forward so that we can learn date, time, and place!” In other words, unless Ford provides a police report — which does not exist — her story is not credible, according to Trump.

Trump of course knows firsthand that not all sexual assaults are reported to the police, as he himself has been accused by at least 22 women of sexual misconduct. Trump has smeared and attacked his own accusers, despite admitting on tape that he has sexually assaulted women.

Trump further demonstrated his ignorance Friday morning by asking, “Why didn’t someone call the FBI 36 years ago?”

For a man who is obsessed with the FBI and what it does and doesn’t do, you’d expect Trump to know that the sexual assault isn’t reported to the FBI because it isn’t a federal crime. But again, Trump isn’t really interested in the truth. He is simply trying to attack and discredit Ford by setting up the impossible condition that if her story were true, she would have reported it — to the wrong authority, no less.

Meanwhile, also predictably, Trump continues to defend Kavanaugh as “a fine man, with an impeccable reputation, who is under assault by radical left wing politicians.”

Trump, like his fellow Republicans in the Senate, have made a show of claiming they want Ford to have an opportunity to tell her story, while making it perfectly clear that her story does not matter. They want Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court, and nothing — not even a credible allegation of attempted rape — will convince them he doesn’t belong there.

Of course Trump was going to attack Ford. Earlier in the week, the White House said that was the strategy all along. But even if it hadn’t, it is Trump’s nature. He insults and smears anyone who makes him look bad, and an admitted sexual predator trying to put an attempted rapist on the Supreme Court is not a good look.

The only surprise is that Trump somehow managed to restrain himself this long.
