Trump has an early morning meltdown before Mueller even starts testifying
Trump sure seems nervous.
Hours before special counsel Robert Mueller appeared before the House Judiciary Committee to testify about the findings of his report, Trump was losing it.
It started before 7 a.m., when Trump demanded to know, “Why didn’t Robert Mueller investigate the investigators?”
And it went on — and on and on — from there.
Trump insisted that the appearance of Mueller’s deputy at Wednesday’s hearing was somehow improper.
“It was NEVER agreed that Robert Mueller could use one of his many Democrat Never Trumper lawyers to sit next to him and help him with his answers,” he tweeted. “This was specifically NOT agreed to, and I would NEVER have agreed to it.” Of course, it isn’t up to Trump to determine how the Judiciary Committee conducts its hearing or which witnesses it allows to appear before it.
Trump also invoked his favorite smears against Mueller and his “18 Angry Democrats,” an oft-repeated and baseless claim that Mueller and everyone who worked on his investigation with him were hyper-partisan Democrats who hated Trump. Why didn’t Mueller investigate Hillary Clinton, former FBI Director James Comey, various FBI leaders and agents, and even himself?
Yes, Trump asked why Mueller “didn’t spend any time” investigating himself.
He lashed out again at the non-existent conflict of interest he has accused Mueller of having, and yet again at Clinton and her emails.
He repeated his claim that Mueller applied for the job of FBI director and that Trump turned him down “the day before he was wrongfully appointed Special Counsel.”
Trump even seemed to hope Mueller would perjure himself.
“Hope he doesn’t say that under oath in the we have numerous witnesses to the interview, including the Vice President of the United States!”
Trump hardly sounds like the same person who declared for weeks, before the Mueller report was released, that he had been fully exonerated. It is obvious that he is nervous about what the report actually says — his claims of having read it himself have been widely dismissed as clearly not true.
The report details the many ways Russia interfered in the election to help install Trump. The report details numerous instances of Trump trying to obstruct that investigation. The report makes clear that — as Mueller has said and will likely be asked to repeat at Wednesday’s hearing — that Mueller and his investigators could not exonerate Trump.
Trump scoffed earlier this week that he won’t even bother watching the testimony. But his hours of early morning ranting about it make clear he’s paying very close attention.
