His top White House spokespeople have tried to create some distance between admitted sexual predator Trump and alleged serial predator Roy Moore, the Republican Trump endorsed for Alabama Senate.

The White House first dismissed the shocking story as “mere allegation.” Counselor Kellyanne Conway then said there was no reason for Trump to comment on the man he’d endorsed because the story was “eight days old.” Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders then suggested that if true, Moore should be held accountable in some way, but that the truth would have to be proved “in a court of law.”

But Trump blew up the whole plan, when asked about Moore on Tuesday, as he headed out of town to spend Thanksgiving at his private resort in Florida.

“We don’t need a liberal person in there, a Democrat,” Trump said, attacking Democrat Doug Jones and launching into a defense of Moore.

REPORTER: Are you ready to talk about Roy Moore?

TRUMP: Yeah, I’ll be talking about him.

REPORTER: Well, what do you think about his candidacy?

Trump: I can tell you one thing for sure: we don’t need a liberal person in there, a Democrat, Jones. I’ve looked at his record. It’s terrible on crime, it’s terrible on the border, it’s terrible on the military. I can tell you for a fact, we do not need somebody that’s going to be bad on crime, bad on borders, bad for the military, bad with the Second Amendment.

REPORTER: Is Roy Moore, a child molester, better than a Democrat?  He’s an accused —

TRUMP: Well, he denies it. Look, he denies it. I mean, if you look at what is really going on, and you look at all the things that have happened over the last 48 hours, he totally denies it. He says it didn’t happen. And you know, you have to listen to him, also. You’re talking about — he said, 40 years ago this did not happen.

REPORTER: Are you going to campaign for him?

TRUMP: I’ll be letting you know next week. But I can tell you, you don’t need somebody who’s soft on crime like Jones.

REPORTER: What is your message to women, sir, during this pivotal moment in our country where we’re talking about sexual misconduct, you’ve had your own allegations against you —

TRUMP: He — let me just tell you, Roy Moore denies it. That’s all I can say. He denies it, and by the way, he totally denies it.

REPORTER: What is your message to women? What is your message —

TRUMP: Women are very special. I think it’s a very special time, because a lot of things are coming out and I think that’s good for our society, and I think it’s very very good for women, and I’m very happy a lot of these things are coming out and I’m very happy it’s being exposed.

Moore has been accused by several women of assaulting or harassing them when they were teenagers and he was in his 30s. Many residents of his town in Alabama have told multiple news outlets that he was infamous for cruising the mall and high school sports events to leer at teenage girls.

Moore and his team of lawyers and defenders have both smeared Moore’s accusers and also insisted that he did nothing wrong by “dating” teenage girls. Breitbart editor Joel Pollak, for example, defended Moore by claiming that because he was “single” during his “relationships” with high school students, the scandal is much ado about nothing.

Now Moore has the most powerful man in the world also coming to his defense and insisting — after Sanders repeatedly said Trump thought the people of Alabama should decide Moore’s fate — that he would rather have an accused pedophile in the Senate than Democrat Doug Jones.

It is an appalling position to take. But for a man who gleefully bragged on tape about kissing and grabbing women without their consent, it isn’t surprising that he would also defend Moore.

It’s further proof of how incredibly unfit for office Trump is and that every day, he brings new disgrace to the office he holds.
