Trump starts his morning saying he has 'nothing against' alleged pedophile

It seems pedophilia and sexual assault just aren’t that big a deal to Trump.

Trump began his Wednesday morning with a series of tweets in which he said he has “nothing against” Roy Moore — the failed 2017 Republican Senate nominee in Alabama who is credibly accused of child molestation and sexual assault by multiple women — but that he doesn’t think Moore should run again for Senate in 2020. (Moore is currently mulling whether to run again.)

“Republicans cannot allow themselves to again lose the Senate seat in the Great State of Alabama,” Trump tweeted. “This time it will be for Six Years, not just Two. I have NOTHING against Roy Moore, and unlike many other Republican leaders, wanted him to win. But he didn’t, and probably won’t.”

Trump continued, “If Alabama does not elect a Republican to the Senate in 2020, many of the incredible gains that we have made during my Presidency may be lost, including our Pro-Life victories. Roy Moore cannot win, and the consequences will be devastating….Judges and Supreme Court Justices!”

While some Republicans ultimately tried to distance themselves from the alleged pedophile, Trump took it upon himself to say that he was never actually bothered by Moore’s grotesque conduct, in which Moore used his positions of power to have sexual relationships with teenage girls when he was in his 30s.

There was absolutely no reason to admit this to the world, but Trump did, firmly placing his marker in the “pedophilia is A-OK” camp.

Of course, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Trump condoned Moore’s conduct, given that Trump re-endorsed Moore even after the misconduct allegations became public, and went on to campaign for Moore days ahead of the 2017 special election.

Moore ultimately lost the Senate race to Democrat Doug Jones in otherwise ruby Red Alabama, thanks to a rebellion from GOP voters who simply could not cast a ballot for a man with such little moral character as Moore.

Trump now doesn’t want Moore to run again in 2020, when Jones will be up for reelection for a full term. (Currently, Jones is serving out the remainder of former Sen. Jeff Sessions’ term.) Not because Trump has a problem with his party welcoming an alleged pedophile — clearly, he doesn’t — but simply because he thinks Moore can’t win.

Still, he simply cannot bring himself to say that Moore’s conduct is reprehensible.

You have to ask yourself why it’s so difficult for Trump to go there.
