Trump’s disgraced labor secretary, Alex Acosta, is resigning amidst growing criticism over the way he handled a previous prosecution of child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, according to Politico.

In the late 2000s, Acosta gave a sweetheart deal to Epstein, who was accused of running a child sex trafficking ring and raping children in his Florida home. Breaking the story of the unconscionably lenient plea deal, the Miami Herald called the agreement Acosta struck with Epstein “the deal of a lifetime.”

The resignation comes only two days after Acosta gave a press conference defending his decision to go easy on a child sex predator. Barry Krischer, former state attorney for Palm Beach County, released a damning statement accusing Acosta of lying about the facts of the prosecution, saying, “I can emphatically state that Mr. Acosta’s recollection of this matter is completely wrong.”

Trump, himself accused by multiple women of sexual assault, unsurprisingly stood by Acosta despite the scandal.

“He did an unbelievable job…until this came up there was never an ounce of problem,” Trump said in response to Acosta’s resignation.

Acosta joins a growing list of Trump Cabinet officials resigning in disgrace.

The culture of corruption Trump ushered into Washington after a largely scandal-free eight years under President Obama continues to reveal itself in the scandal-plagued people Trump appoints to top positions.
