Americans' pride in their country plummets to a 19-year low under Trump
Since Trump took over, Americans’ pride in the U.S. has steadily dropped in an annual Gallup poll.
Proud to be an American? Not so much under Trump, according to a Tuesday Gallup poll.
As Trump is about to hijack July 4 celebrations to celebrate himself, the new poll shows Americans’ pride in the country drop to the lowest level in the 19-year history of the question. In 2016, 81% of Americans were “extremely” or “very” proud to be an American. In 2019, that number dropped to just 70%.
Since Gallup introduced the question in 2001, Americans’ pride in the U.S. had never dropped below 80% — that is, until Trump took over.
In 2017, only 75% of Americans were proud of the country, and that dropped to 72% in 2018 and now 70% in 2019.
Further, the percent of Americans “extremely” proud of the country had remained above 50% in every year since 2001… until last year.
In 2018, it fell to 47%. In 2019, it fell once again, to 45%.
The historically low numbers “are likely to continue until Trump is no longer in office,” Gallup wrote about the poll.
When asked about specific aspects of American life and culture that had less to do with Trump, Americans exhibited much more pride. For example, 91% of Americans are proud of American scientific achievements and 85% are proud of American culture and arts.
But when the topic of politics emerges, the pride level takes a hit.
Only 32% of Americans are proud of the political system.
Trump has spent more than two years in office so far and is considered by many to be an embarrassment.
On his recent trip to Japan for the G-20 meeting, Trump chuckled with Putin about both Russian interference in the 2016 election and how to “get rid” of journalists who write unflatteringly about leaders. He then traipsed over to North Korea to hang out with its murderous dictator Kim Jong Un.
Trump refuses to condemn Saudi Arabia for the gruesome murder of a Washington Post reporter, but he’ll repeatedly attack longtime allies of the United States.
His trade wars are wreaking havoc on farmers across the country and levying a multibillion-dollar tax on every consumer in the country.
On his signature issue of immigration, he is best known for a cruel policy of ripping thousands of children away from their families, and more recently, for the horrid conditions of detention camps along the southern border.
America has a long history of striving to be a more perfect union. There’s plenty to be proud of, including the U.S. Women’s National Team as they dominate in the World Cup.
Yet it took Trump only 893 days to drive pride in America to record lows.
