Americans are overwhelmingly in favor of an independent commission to investigate how Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election. A new poll from NBC finds that 73 percent of respondents want an independent probe over the congressional investigations being led by Republicans in the House and Senate.
The poll shows a majority of Americans do not believe the Republican-controlled Congress is up to the task, with 61 percent saying they have “little to no confidence” in Congress conducting a fair and impartial investigation.
That comes after Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, was forced to recuse himself after interacting with the Trump team and promoting their unsubstantiated claim that Donald Trump was wiretapped by President Obama.
Reports have surfaced that there are no full-time staffers working on the Senate side of the probe, nor have they interviewed key figures in Trump’s orbit.
While Democrats have raised the alarm about how Republicans are operating, only one Republican in the House has backed legislation calling for an independent commission.
Evidence of an illicit alliance between the Trump campaign and Russia continues to mount on a near-daily basis. America needs an independent investigation into Russia’s influence over our presidential election in order to restore confidence.
