Chuck Todd destroys Kellyanne Conway's absurd lie about family separations
In her desperation to defend Trump’s cruel policy, Conway forgot how time works.

Trump’s White House counselor, Kellyanne Conway, made yet another desperate attempt this weekend to blame Democrats for Trump’s policy of ripping children away from their parents at the border. But she was promptly humiliated by her old enemy, reality.
On Sunday morning’s edition of “Meet the Press,” host Chuck Todd foiled Conway’s despicable attempt to pit the migrant children being ripped from their mothers against the Dreamers who have lived in America since they were children.
“Chuck, I don’t remember a single Democrat, I could be mistaken, maybe one murmured it, but in a one-hour meeting back in January in the cabinet room … did this issue come up?” Conway asked. “The Democrats only wanted to talk about DACA and the Dreamers, why weren’t they mentioning this?”
“In fairness, kids weren’t being separated from their parents then. This policy got implemented in April,” Todd replied. “The zero tolerance policy where every migrant, every asylum-seeker is treated as a criminal. That is an April change, so why would they bring it up?”
Conway was referring to the January photo op during which Trump repeatedly had to be reminded of his own positions on immigration issues. As Todd noted, that meeting predated the family separation policy by several months — so unless one of the Democrats had a magic Delorean, they could not possibly have brought the policy up.
Conway also tried to co-opt public outrage over the family separation policy, but Todd wouldn’t let her.
“This is a question of morality, this is a question of American morality,” Todd said.
“You’ve heard me, you’ve heard me weigh in on that,” Conway said. “As a mother, as a Catholic, as somebody who has got a conscience … I will tell you that nobody likes this policy,” Conway said. “You saw the president on camera, that he wants this to end, but everybody has — Congress has to act.”
“But he can end this on his own,” Todd said, adding that even with a zero tolerance policy, the government should keep families together. “Why don’t you create a family detention center?” he asked.
“We had those under President Obama,” Conway said, “But the Democrats are holding up the funding to expand those.”
Conway was making her first appearance on “Meet the Press” since she invented the term “alternative facts” just days into Trump’s administration — so it’s fitting that she’d roll out these absurdities in her return engagement.
But despite her lies, Conway did manage to concede that this is, in fact, a policy change that Trump made in April, and that the policy is unspeakably cruel and immoral.
It’s time for this horror to end.
