Conservative House leader calls congresswomen "eye candy" on steps of US Capitol
Rep. Mark Walker (R-NC) seems to think it’s acceptable to call his women colleagues in the House “eye candy.” Walker is the head of the conservative Republican Study Committee (RSC), one of the leading congressional caucuses on the right, which has spearheaded the push for tax cuts and other conservative legislation and claims some of […]
Walker is the head of the conservative Republican Study Committee (RSC), one of the leading congressional caucuses on the right, which has spearheaded the push for tax cuts and other conservative legislation and claims some of the most radical conservatives among its members.
Walker made his comment at a RSC press event as he was pushing the group’s priorities and demanding that other Republicans do more work to support their extreme agenda.
“The accomplished men and women of the RSC — and women; if it wasn’t sexist, I would say the RSC eye candy, but we’ll leave that out of the record — are not attention seekers,” he said, to the awkward laughter of his colleagues.
If Walker was hoping to receive credit for pretending to refrain from making a patently sexist remark about his colleagues, he must be sorely disappointed.
Lauren Horsch, a reporter from Walker’s home state newspaper, The News & Observer, commented on the sexist remark by noting, “I’d call them ‘Representatives’ but what do I know.” She added, “Women — no matter how successful they are — are always subjected to sexist comments. We can, and should do better.”
In 2016, Walker claimed that he was “deeply troubled” by Donald Trump’s bragging about sexually assaulting women, and characterized them as “vile comments.” Despite that, he went on to support Trump’s candidacy.
His latest comments get to the heart of who Walker is, exposing that his opposition to sexism was largely a show.
