Republicans are starting to warm to the idea of impeachment amid Ukraine scandal

The decision by House Democrats to begin an impeachment inquiry into the effort by Donald Trump to enlist the Ukrainian president’s help for his 2020 reelection campaign has been gaining some support from an unexpected group: Republicans.

According to a poll from Morning Consult and Politico, 43% of Americans supported beginning impeachment proceedings against Trump and 43% opposed, when surveyed over the past three days. This represents a significant increase in support and drop in opposition in just a few days; a similar survey between September 20-22 found just 36% favored the idea and 49% were against it.

Most interestingly, the poll showed a small but growing number of Republicans have changed their mind on the issue. Some 10% of Republicans surveyed supported impeachment proceedings in the September 24-26 sample — double the percentage who supported the idea just a few days earlier.

Other polls have also shown a shift in public views on impeachment. An NPR/PBS/Marist poll found Americans support the House’s decision by a 49-46 margin.

A Business Insider/Survey Monkey poll conducted Wednesday and Thursday found Americans favored the House actually impeaching Trump by a 45%-30% plurality.

Trump has made a big deal about previous polls showing that impeachment was not popular but has so far been silent on this latest developments.
