GOP begs Congress to 'move on' from the Trump crimes Mueller found
Republicans in Congress are trying to sweep Trump’s criminal activity under the rug.
In the hours following special counsel Robert Mueller’s Wednesday press conference, Republicans across the board misrepresented Mueller’s words and demanded Congress stop any investigations into Trump’s criminal activity.
At the press conference, Mueller made clear that Trump was not exonerated, saying, “if we had had confidence that the president clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said so.” Instead, Mueller said Congress is responsible for determining the extent of criminal activity by a sitting president.
But Republicans don’t want to keep the spotlight on Trump’s felonies — they’re hoping to ignore his lawbreaking and just “move on.” In fact, a surprisingly large number of Republicans in Congress used the same phrase following Mueller’s press conference.
“It is well past time for Democrats to move on from this madness,” Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), a member of Republican House leadership, said.
“It’s time to move on,” Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) said.
“We need to move on and #legislate for the American people,” Rep. Billy Long (R-MO) added.
“Case closed. It’s past time to move on,” said Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA).
“Same conclusions. No new information. Time to move on,” said Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH).
Similar statements were made by House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Rep. Chris Stewart (R-UT), and Rep. Roger Marshall (R-KS) among others.
Most Republicans seem determined to turn a blind eye to Trump’s litany of crimes.
For example, the Southern District of New York identified Trump as leading a scheme to pay hush money to his alleged mistresses in order to influence the 2016 election. And Mueller’s report lays out multiple instances of Trump himself obstructing justice, including ordering his White House counsel, Don McGahn, to fire Mueller and then telling McGahn to lie about the interaction.
Democrats have only been in charge of the House of Representatives since January, but have still managed to both open investigations into Trump’s wrongdoing and legislate on issues important to the American people.
Despite overwhelming Republican objection, the House has passed legislation addressing voting rights, gun safety, violence against women, paycheck fairness, health care, prescription drugs, and LGBTQ equality.
Meanwhile, Republicans are spending their time shilling for Trump and desperately trying to keep Trump’s malfeasance out of the spotlight.
