GOP senators privately beg Trump not to embarrass himself on 'emergency'

On the eve of an expected smackdown from the GOP-controlled Senate over his fake national emergency, Trump on Wednesday night received a surprise visit from a trio of Republican senators. According to the Washington Post, they begged him to find some way to propose new wall funding and not get totally embarrassed.

It’s unclear what exactly the three senators — Ted Cruz of Texas, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, and Ben Sasse of Nebraska — proposed.

Some Republicans earlier in the week were hoping Trump would sign onto a bill that would limit his emergency declaration powers, but would allow Trump to keep the current fake wall emergency.

But Trump rejected that idea, as did Democrats like Speaker Nancy Pelosi — who said allowing Trump to declare a national emergency “just this once” wouldn’t fly.

But whatever the senators tried, it did didn’t work. Trump has no plans to change course on the fake emergency.

In fact, the senators may have actually angered Trump more, as he rattled off a series of rage tweets Thursday morning ahead of the expected emergency repeal vote.

“A big National Emergency vote today by The United States Senate on Border Security & the Wall (which is already under major construction). I am prepared to veto, if necessary,” Trump tweeted. “The Southern Border is a National Security and Humanitarian Nightmare, but it can be easily fixed!”

Reports indicate that up to a dozen GOP senators could vote Tuesday to repeal Trump’s emergency.

For a Senate Republican caucus that has capitulated to the president’s demands at every turn, that would truly be an embarrassing defeat for Trump.
