During her concession speech, Hillary Clinton, who has spent her career advocating for women and girls, said: “To all the little girls who are watching this: Never doubt that you are valuable, and powerful, and deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world to pursue and achieve your own dreams.”
That part of her speech went out in a tweet from her account.
"To all the little girls watching…never doubt that you are valuable and powerful & deserving of every chance & opportunity in the world."
— Hillary Clinton (@HillaryClinton) November 9, 2016
Since it was posted on November 9, it has now been retweeted 637,000 times and favorited over 1 million times, making it the most retweeted political tweet of the year, according to Twitter.
It is a bittersweet reminder of the campaign Clinton ran — and why so many of her supporters were, despite a persistent contrary narrative, enthusiastic about her candidacy.
Even in defeat, she centered the importance of gender equality; of the honorable and essential pursuit of making the world a place that believes in little girls.
Now that we find ourselves in a place of resistance, we must always remember that more of us voted for her, for her extraordinary vision, and for her belief that little girls are valuable for their talents and powerful in their abilities.
Progress may have setbacks, but love still trumps hate.
