New Biden ad shows world leaders mocking Trump
‘They’re laughing at him.’
A new campaign ad from Democratic front-runner and former Vice President Joe Biden uses images of world leaders laughing at and mocking Donald Trump to make the case that America needs a new leader in 2020.
“World leaders caught on camera laughing about President Trump,” the ad begins, alongside recent footage of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
The leaders were caught joking about Trump behind his back at a December NATO meeting in London earlier this week.
“They’re laughing at him,” a voice then says, over separate footage of a United Nations audience laughing at Trump during his 2018 U.N. General Assembly speech.
The ad ends with clips of Biden calling Trump “insincere, ill-informed, corrupt, [and] dangerously incompetent and incapable, in my view, of world leadership.”
The words, “We need a leader the world respects” appear on the screen before fading to Biden’s campaign logo.
Trump ran in 2016 on a message of being a respected world leader.
“We need a President who isn’t a laughing stock to the entire World,” Trump tweeted in 2014, taking a swipe at President Obama. “We need a truly great leader, a genius at strategy and winning. Respect!”
Earlier this week, the Washington Post compiled six separate instances of world leaders mocking Trump or laughing at him since he took office, several of which were included in the Biden ad. In once case, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was caught on camera mocking Trump’s affinity for bragging about fake polls showing his popularity.
“We’re winning in the real polls. The online polls. They are so easy to win,” Turnbull said at an off-the-record dinner, in video that was leaked later.
It’s not just world leaders who seem unimpressed with Trump. A Pew survey of people in 37 countries found “America’s global image plummeted following the election of President Donald Trump.”
At the end of Obama’s tenure, 64% of those surveyed expressed confidence in his ability to direct America’s role in the world. When Trump entered office, that number dropped to just 22%.
Biden acknowledged as much in this week’s ad. “If we give Donald Trump four more years, we’ll have a great deal of difficulty, if ever, of being able to recover America’s standing in the world and our capacity to bring nations together,” he said.
Biden is currently leading in national polls to be the Democratic nominee, though Pete Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend, Indiana, is leading in Iowa and New Hampshire polls.
