28 members of Congress are calling on Barr to resign for lying — so far

A growing number of members of Congress are now calling on Attorney General William Barr to resign after a letter from special counsel Robert Mueller revealed Barr lied to Congress and the American people.

During an April 20 Senate hearing, Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) asked Barr, “Did Bob Mueller support your conclusion?”

“I don’t know whether Mueller supported my conclusion,” Barr falsely stated.

“We now know Mueller stated his concerns on March 27, and that Barr totally misled me, the Congress, and the public,” Van Hollen said late Tuesday night. “He must resign.”

Van Hollen wasn’t alone.

“AG Barr has lied to both the House and Senate. Let’s call it what it is,” Sen Mazie Hirono said Tuesday night. “As far as I’m concerned, he should not be the Attorney General.”

On Wednesday, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) called Barr “a disgrace” and said he should resign, adding that “his alarming efforts to suppress the Mueller report show that he’s not a credible head of federal law enforcement.”

As Barr continued to lie about the Mueller report and defend Trump during his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, Sens. Kamala Harris (D-CA), Kirsten Gilibrand (D-NY), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), and Ron Wyden (D-OR) joined the call for Barr to step down.

Numerous members of the House echoed these calls, including the chairs of the powerful Intelligence Committee and Financial Services Committee.

“Attorney General Barr should resign,” said Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), chair of the Intelligence Committee. Schiff said Barr cannot be trusted to impartially administer justice.

“If he does not resign, he should be facing impeachment proceedings,” Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), chair of the Financial Services Committee, said Tuesday night.

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) had some career advice for Barr if he decides to resign.

“He absolutely needs to go, and then he can apply to be White House press secretary where he can lie all he wants,” Lieu told CNN host Don Lemon.

This week’s calls for Barr’s resignation echo calls from April, when several members of Congress demanded Barr resign for his misleading press conference before the release of the Mueller report.

Along with Schiff, Waters, and Lieu, the list of House members calling on Barr to step down so far includes Reps. Kathleen Rice (D-NY), Ro Khanna (D-CA), Jim McGovern (D-MA), Mike Quigley (D-IL), David Cicilline (D-RI), Steve Cohen (D-TN), Mark Pocan (D-WI), Val Demings (D-FL), Eric Swalwell (D-CA), Eliot Engel (D-NY), Norma Torres (D-CA), Barbara Lee (D-CA), Joe Kennedy III (D-MA), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Chellie Pingree (D-ME), and Seth Moulton (D-MA).

Members of Congress are outraged that a sitting attorney general would lie so brazenly to protect a president, and want Barr held accountable for misleading them and the American people about the truth contained in Mueller’s report.

This post has been updated to include additional calls for Barr’s resignation.
