Mueller report: Russia targeted Clinton emails 5 hours after Trump asked

The Mueller report reveals that just five hours after Trump publicly asked for Hillary Clinton’s emails to be hacked, Russian operatives directly targeted Clinton’s private emails.

On July 27, 2016, Trump said at a campaign event: “Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing.”

The report by special counsel Robert Mueller notes that the targeting of Clinton’s emails by GRU (Russia’s military intelligence agency) occurred on that same day.

“Within five hours of Trump’s statement, GRU officers targeted for the first time Clinton’s personal office,” the report notes.

The report further explains: “After candidate Trump’s remarks, Unit 26165 [of GRU] created and sent malicious links targeting 15 email accounts,” which included an email account belonging to a “Clinton aide.”

The report notes that the investigation “did not find evidence of earlier GRU attempt to compromise accounts hosted on this domain.” The investigation was “unclear” on how the Russian agency knew about the email accounts in question because they “were not public.”

Russia and Trump were clearly working toward a shared goal: preventing Hillary Clinton from winning.

They worked in concert on that goal — and when Trump told the Russians to jump, the hackers in Vladimir Putin’s employ responded almost immediately.
