House Minority Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has issued a statement echoing Senate Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) call for a bipartisan Congressional investigation into Russian interference in the election, urgently noting: “There must be no equivocation or ignoring the seriousness of the intelligence community’s conclusion about Russia’s actions.”
Her statement is as blunt as it is necessary, and she minced no words in calling out House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) for his craven refusal to join the increasing bipartisan calls for a thorough investigation:
The U.S. intelligence community has determined that Russia interfered in U.S. elections. There must be no equivocation or ignoring the seriousness of the intelligence community’s conclusion about Russia’s actions. Regardless of the outcome of the election, the American people deserve to know the truth and a commitment to protect our democracy from foreign meddling.
Congress has a responsibility to investigate Russian hacking into our election. I also support the proposal by House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Ranking Member Elijah Cummings and Intelligence Committee Member Eric Swalwell to establish a bipartisan, independent commission.
Speaker Ryan must join the bipartisan call for a formal investigation into Russia’s unprecedented assault on our democracy.
Yes. He must. But, as of this writing, his office refuses to comment on “whether he believes House committees, including oversight and intelligence panels, should investigate the matter.”
That is simply not good enough.
