New poll shows Americans like Mike Pence even less than they like Donald Trump

Much of the attention paid to opinion polls have focused on the man at the top of the ticket, Donald Trump, for his failure to shore up a positive approval rating from the American people. But a new NBC News poll finds that Trump’s misery loves company. Vice President Mike Pence is among the least popular politicians in the United States.

Only 38 percent of the respondents to NBC’s poll had a favorable opinion of Mike Pence, while 39 percent disapprove. For perspective, Trump’s approval in the same poll is an anemic 39 percent.

Meanwhile, Pence fares even worse when compared to Planned Parenthood, his longtime nemesis. Of those asked, 50 percent had a positive feeling about the group, while only 28 percent did not, causing it to rank near the top of the list.

Just a few weeks ago, Pence made a big show of casting the deciding vote in the Senate to roll back protections put in place by President Barack Obama to protect family planning funding through Title X — a direct attack on Planned Parenthood and its ability to serve its patients.

That vote came after Pence headlined the March for Life rally in January, telling anti-abortion activists, “This administration will work with the Congress to end taxpayer funding of abortion and abortion providers.”

Pence has a long and horrifying record of trying to undermine women’s health care. While in Congress, he was the first to promote legislation seeking to defund Planned Parenthood, and as governor of Indiana, he signed a cascade of legislation attempting to deny women the right to abortion access, some of which was so extreme that even his fellow Republicans objected.

A decade later, millions have registered their support for Planned Parenthood and its mission to aid vulnerable communities who need their services, while Pence has plummeted to the lower tier of respect for public officials, right beside Donald Trump.

That is a strong message from voters to about their support for women’s health care that the very unpopular Trump and Pence really should not ignore.
