Rush Limbaugh is terrified Trump's war on health care will doom GOP
Trump is fixated on attacking Obamacare — and far-right radio host Rush Limbaugh is worried it will hurt Republicans.
Even Rush Limbaugh, a dyed-in-the-wool Trump fanboy, is seriously second-guessing Trump’s new campaign to “terminate” health care for millions of people.
Limbaugh appeared on Fox News on Thursday night for a friendly chat with anchor Bret Baier, who asked the right-wing talk show host about Trump’s renewed attack on Obamacare.
Limbaugh acknowledged that while he understood Trump’s desire to beat Democrats on the issue, he would prefer Trump focus more on executing his racist immigration policy.
“I understand that it is an issue that the Democrat (sic) Party has owned,” Limbaugh said. “I know the president would love to take it away from them and have it be something that the American people rely on the Republican Party for.”
But Limbaugh admitted that Republicans have yet to come up with an alternative health care approach that Americans would even consider. Instead, he thinks Trump should just double down on racism.
“I wish that we would focus on immigration,” he concluded, urging Trump to “take every bit of political capital he has and use it on the border.”
Attacking health care has already been toxic for Republicans.
They have repeatedly failed to repeal or replace Obamacare — and those efforts cost them their majority in the House.
Republicans keep trying to gut protections for people with pre-existing conditions, and it’s a political loser. Even a radical right-winger like Limbaugh, who has for years pushed lies about health care to help Republicans, understands this.
So do many Republican senators, who are reportedly already fretting behind closed doors about investing so much of the party’s energy into a political battle it is likely to lose.
Limbaugh understands that Trump, who looks to Fox for guidance and direction, was likely watching his interview with Baier. In fact, just a few minutes after that interview, Trump gave Limbaugh a shout-out during his rally in Michigan.
Limbaugh’s plea to Trump was clear: Pull back on the doomed health care attack, and stay focused on your racist fear-mongering about immigration and the border.
But Trump and Republicans in Congress still seem determined to kill health care for millions. It is unlikely to end well for them.
