The resistance has done way more in 100 days than Donald Trump

Have these last 100 days been some of the longest of your life? Are you more exhausted than you thought possible and anxious about the direction the country is heading? If so, you are not alone. But breathe and spend a moment to take this in: Donald Trump has accomplished almost none of his political […]

APTOPIX Trump Inauguration Protests

But breathe and spend a moment to take this in: Donald Trump has accomplished almost none of his political goals since taking office. And you are what stopped him.

Yes, you, the American people. Your participation in protests, your hat-knitting, your telephone calls to Congress, your social media activism, your sign-making, your email and letter writing, your donations to progressive organizations, your showing up at airports to support immigrants, your kindness, your courage, your faith in what this country can achieve when its people come together — all of it mattered. You recognized the dangers of Trumpism, and you said, “No. Not here. Not in my country. Not to my loved ones, friends, and community. This will not happen on my watch.”

You — the people of the resistance — rose up and took action. And it is working.

Unlike when President Barack Obama entered office in 2008, Trump inherited a stable economy with minimal unemployment, low inflation, a rising stock market, and consistent growth. The United States had strong relationships with its allies and particularly its immediate neighbors, Mexico and Canada.

And Trump’s Republican Party kept control of the House and Senate, a perfect situation that should have allowed him to easily pass his ambitious legislative agenda.

Yet here we are, 100 days later, and the grassroots uprising of the resistance has accomplished far more than Trump and his fellow Republicans.

The day after Trump’s inauguration, millions of people participated in Women’s Marches throughout the nation and in solidarity actions across the globe.

When Trump tried to institute a Muslim ban — not once but twice — thousands of people demonstrated at airports around the country to offer kindness and legal support to incoming immigrants and refugees, and the bans were struck down in multiple courts.

A record-breaking number of calls to Congress contributed to the defeat of the Republicans’ attempt to repeal Obamacare and steal access to health care coverage away from millions of Americans who depend on it.

During the congressional recess, tens of thousands of constituents attended town halls in every state to put pressure on their elected representatives to defeat the Trump agenda.

Despite Trump’s lies and attempts at deflection, the resistance succeeded in keeping concerns about collusion between Trump and Russia front and center. As a result, Trump’s former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn was fired, and both Attorney General Jeff Sessions and House Intelligence Committee chair Devin Nunes were forced to recuse themselves from the investigations.

Women in particular have stepped up to lead the resistance: 86 percent of anti-Trump calls to Congress have been made by women, and more than 12,000 women have taken first steps toward running for public office.

Make no mistake: the resistance is real, the resistance is working, and — heading into the next 100 days — the resistance needs you.
