GOP attack dog to Trump lawyer: If Trump is innocent, 'act like it'

Trump is running out of friends thanks to his threats against special counsel Robert Mueller and the firing of FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe. And even reliably partisan Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy is fed up.

On Saturday, Trump’s lawyer John Dowd called for Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to end the Mueller investigation. Trump followed that up by tweeting several attacks on Mueller.

And it was enough to make Gowdy take a stand on Mueller’s behalf.

On “Fox News Sunday,” host Chris Wallace asked the South Carolina congressman if he supports Dowd’s call to end the investigation.

“I don’t, and I think that president’s attorney frankly does him a disservice when he says that, and when he frames the investigation that way,” Gowdy said.

“If you look at the jurisdiction of Robert Mueller, first and foremost, what did Russia do to this country in 2016?” he continued. “That is supremely important, and it has nothing to do with collusion.”

“If you have an innocent client, act like it,” Gowdy added. “Russia attacked our country.”

Gowdy did his level best to put the blame on Dowd, although Dowd explicitly said he was speaking on Trump’s behalf. And the congressman still absurdly claims there was no “evidence of collusion.”

But even he was forced to admit that Trump is making himself look guilty, at the very least.

South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham has already warned of impeachment if Trump goes after Mueller. But House Republicans appear to be crossing their fingers, for the moment, and hoping they aren’t put to that test.

Of course, the way things have been going in recent special elections, they may not have to worry about it much longer.
