Trump attacks Denmark's prime minister just for saying he can't buy Greenland

Trump’s harebrained idea to buy Greenland has gone from a joke to a full-scale diplomatic mess, with Trump stoking dissent with an American ally.

On Wednesday morning, Trump lashed out at Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, calling her “nasty” for flatly rejecting to entertain the idea of selling Greenland, a self-ruling territory of Denmark.

“I looked forward to going, but I thought that the prime minister’s statement that it was absurd, it was an absurd idea, was nasty,” Trump said of his canceled visit to Denmark. “I thought it was an inappropriate statement. All she had to do was say no, we wouldn’t be interested.”

Of course, Denmark did say that it wasn’t interested and Greenland wasn’t for sale, but Trump continued to talk about it and make “jokes” on Twitter about it.

“But we can’t treat the United States of America the way they treated us under President Obama,” Trump continued. “I thought it was a very not nice way of saying something. They could have told me no.”

Trump insisted it was a “good idea” to purchase Greenland from Denmark.

“All they had to do was say, ‘No, we’d rather not do that’ or ‘We’d rather not talk about it,'” he went on. “Don’t say ‘What an absurd idea that is.’ She’s not talking to me. She’s talking to the United States of America. You don’t talk to the United States that way.”

The whole episode started with an Aug. 16 Wall Street Journal report that Trump was pondering a way to purchase Greenland. Even Trump’s own team questioned the seriousness of the plan, according to the Journal.

The idea was quickly dismissed by Greenland’s foreign minister, who said, “We’re open for business, not for sale.”

Other officials were more direct, calling Trump’s decision to cancel the meeting in Denmark “grotesque” and accusing Trump of “throwing a hissy fit.”

Trump’s calling a powerful woman “nasty” is nothing new. He often referred to Hillary Clinton that way during the 2016 campaign and has also used the term to describe both House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle.

Now he is making an international incident and insulting allies because Trump can’t handle powerful women telling him no.
