Trump skips Statue of Liberty museum opening that celebrates immigrants
Trump skipped the opening of a museum at the Statue of Liberty that celebrates America’s immigrant history.
Dignitaries from around the world gathered at the Statue of Liberty on Wednesday night to celebrate the opening of a new museum that offers context on the monument that’s become a symbol of America’s history of immigrants.
But one major figure was conspicuously absent from the opening: Trump.
Rather than attend the opening of the museum that highlights the history of the statue that became a symbol of America’s immigrant fabric, Trump skipped the event to roll out yet another racist immigration proposal in Washington, D.C., that’s doomed to failure.
The New York Daily News reported that Trump planned to attend the opening but bagged the idea after hearing rumblings that his attendance wouldn’t be celebrated by the guests, who included former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY).
Other well-known guests included Amazon founder and Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos, Oprah Winfrey and fashion designer Diane von Fürstenberg,
Upon arriving at the museum opening celebration, Winfrey told reporters that the message of the museum was to remind people that America welcomes immigrants.
“It’s important that we establish that we’re a country that has open arms and not closed borders for people,” Winfrey said, according to the Associated Press. “It’s important because we let people know why America is what it is, it’s about an ideal and that ideal is freedom for everybody.”
On Thursday, a day after the museum’s dedication, Trump will roll out an immigration proposal that would raise the skill requirements needed to gain admittance to the U.S. as an immigrant. It has almost no shot of passing either the Democratic-controlled House or the GOP-run Senate.
After unveiling his latest doomed immigration proposal, Trump will head to New York City to attend high-dollar fundraisers, landing at a helipad on Manhattan that’s just feet away from the Statue of Liberty.
