Trump throws tantrum over bogus 'spy' claim that even Fox News debunked

Trump continues to paddle furiously upstream, desperate trying to keep his “spy” lie afloat. But he’s doing it even after a pair of Fox News faithful supporters debunked the nonsense as being not credible.

On Thursday, Trump whined about how news outlets were supposedly thwarting the blockbuster “spy” tale:

The corrupt Mainstream Media is working overtime not to mention the infiltration of people, Spies (Informants), into my campaign! Surveillance much?

Truth is the hollow “spy” claim flopped spectacularly after Trump wildly hyped the idea that the FBI had planted people inside his 2016 campaign. It’s all part of a convoluted tale of a rogue Deep State that was out to sink Trump in 2016.

Last week though, after Republicans demanded a classified briefing at the Department of Justice, the spy story evaporated, with Republicans and Democrats coming away from the session convinced the FBI acted appropriately.

This week the bad news for Trump’s spy tale continued when Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC), a partisan who led the GOP’s Obama-era Benghazi witch hunt, went on Fox News and said the spy story makes no sense.

Specifically, Gowdy said the FBI acted appropriately when it used an informant to make contact with several members of Trump’s presidential campaign shortly after it began its counterintelligence investigation in 2016.

After attending last week’s classified briefing at the Department of Justice, Gowdy stressed, “I am even more convinced that the FBI did exactly what my fellow citizens would want them to do when they got the information they got.”

Note that in 2016 the FBI also warned the Trump campaign that Russian operatives were trying to infiltrate. (Little did the FBI know that Trump officials might welcome the Russian overtures.)

If Gowdy’s debunking — on Fox News no less — weren’t bad enough for the White House, another loyal Trump defender, Fox News legal analyst Andrew Napolitano,  also shot holes through the bogus spy lie this week when he took aim at claims being pushed by Trump’s attorney, Rudy Giuliani.

“The allegations by Mayor Giuliani over the weekend, which would lead to us to believe that the Trump people think that the FBI had an undercover agent who inveigled his way into the campaign, and was there as a spy on the campaign, seem to be baseless,” Napolitano said. “There’s no evidence for that whatsoever.”

No evidence whatsoever.

But it appears Trump has no other options, as special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation hones in on its targets. So Trump stubbornly sticks with what he’s got, his spy lies.
