Trump gloats about victory of Democrat who wants to impeach him
Trump tried to take a victory lap after Rep. Joe Crowley lost to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Then she rained on his parade.
Trump tried to interpret the results of the primary election in New York’s 14th District in terms favorable to him.
After Democratic candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s surprise win against Rep. Joe Crowley (D), Trump said the outcome of the race showed “Trump Hater” Crowley “should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!”
But he ended up looking silly when, just hours after his tweet, Ocasio-Cortez deflated Trump’s smug, misguided response.
Appearing on CNN, Ocasio-Cortez was asked if she would support impeaching Trump. She instantly replied, “Yes.”
She went on to elaborate, “There are serious grounds [for impeachment] in violations of the emoluments clause from day one.”
She also pointed out that there are “one or more investigations happening” of the Trump presidency that could easily unearth violations warranting his impeachment.
The ongoing investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller into Russian election interference has already secured convictions and indictments of several Trump campaign figures.
Much of Ocasio-Cortez’s candidacy has targeted the foundations of Trump’s bigoted presidency.
She has called for abolishing ICE, calling out the Trump policy of separating families and abducting children and joining protests of an ICE detention center in Texas.
Ocasio-Cortez has also been vocal about Trump’s mishandling of recovery efforts in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, and she’s called for a Marshall Plan to help those Americans recover.
Trump tried to take a victory lap over the New York election result, but he just ended up highlighting a candidate with strong popular support, and one who is directly opposed to everything he stands for and wants him out of office.
Whoops.
