Trump: Farmers who want me to end my trade war are 'dumb people'

Trump derided farmers and other Americans who have criticized his trade war for causing economic hardship, referring to them as “dumb” while addressing reporters on Tuesday.

Trump was asked to address concerns that the trade war is hurting the U.S. economy, possibly creating a recession.

“Somebody had to take on what China was doing to the United States economically,” Trump said. “The smart people say, ‘Thank you very much,’ and the dumb people have no idea, and then you have the political people and they go with the wind.”

Trump also insisted that the United States is “winning big” on the trade issue.

But farmers are not winning. They have had to receive billions in bailout funds from taxpayers in an attempt to supplement the income they’re losing because China won’t pay Trump’s tariffs.

On Monday, the American Farm Bureau Federation slammed the trade war as “a body blow to thousands of farmers and ranchers who are already struggling to get by.” The group said that, because of the trade war, farmers could lose all of the $9.1 billion market that existed in Chinese trade by the end of the year.

Trump has continued to insist America is in a “very good position” with China while his administration has not been able to obtain concessions through multiple negotiations with China’s government.

No matter how much money is lost or how the economy is impacted, Trump appears to be dead set on following through with his war.
