'Nothing is beneath him': Veterans slam Trump for attacking his rivals on D-Day
Trump spewed petty insults at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and special counsel Robert Mueller from the Normandy American Cemetery in France.
With the graves of brave American soldiers in the background, Trump spent Thursday morning hurling petty insults at perceived political rivals while in Normandy, France.
“Nancy Pelosi is a disaster, okay? She’s a disaster,” Trump told Fox News host Laura Ingraham. Trump also called special counsel Robert Mueller a “fool.” The interview took place at the hallowed Normandy American Cemetery on the 75th anniversary of D-Day, when thousands of Americans died fighting against Nazi Germany.
The timing of Trump’s churlish rhetoric did not sit well with VoteVets, a group dedicated to supporting and electing veterans.
“Trump took time at the solemn site of the Normandy American Cemetery, surrounded by the graves of nearly 10,000 brave U.S. service members, to attack his personal rivals,” the group said on Twitter. “Nothing is beneath him.”
Speaker Pelosi is also in Normandy to commemorate D-Day. Members of the media asked if she had any response to Trump’s attack, but Pelosi declined to respond.
“I don’t talk about the president while I’m out of the country,” she said. “That’s my principle.”
In a bygone political era, most politicians adhered to a 1947 comment by Sen. Arthur Vandenberg (R-MI), who said that politicians should stop “partisan politics at the water’s edge.” But Trump, in addition to breaking laws, also regularly breaks this custom.
When he was in Japan, Trump sided with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un in attacking former vice president Joe Biden. Biden, who is running for the Democratic nomination, did not respond until Trump had returned to the United States.
“To be on foreign soil, on Memorial Day, and to side repeatedly with a murderous dictator against a fellow American and former Vice President speaks for itself,” Kate Bedingfield, Biden’s deputy campaign manager, said in a statement soon after Trump stepped foot on U.S. soil.
Even on a solemn day meant to commemorate a time when Americans united with allies around the world to defeat a common enemy, Trump cannot muster the dignity to refrain from partisan attacks. Nothing, indeed, is beneath him.
