Twelve months ago, angry Democrats gathered at the Atlantic County Board of Freeholders meeting in New Jersey to denounce Freeholder John Carman, a local Republican who had mocked the Women’s March.
Carman posted a meme on Facebook that asked, “Will the women’s protest end in time for them to cook dinner?”
This week, some of those same Democrats returned for the swearing in of Ashley Bennett, the first-time candidate who challenged Carman and easily thwarted his re-election bid in a Republican stronghold located in southern New Jersey.
And her supporters erupted in applause and cheers when she officially took office.
“The one thing I noticed about Ashley during the campaign this year is she’s in it for all the right reasons. There was never talk of personal glorification,” said Colin Bell, the New Jersey state senator who administered the oath of office to Bennett.
“She got into politics for the right reasons. She saw something that she didn’t like and rather than complain about it, she put her name out there and ran.”
A psychiatric emergency screener, Bennett was disgusted with Carman’s cheap and clichéd attack on the Women’s March, and his initial refusal to apologize. But she was also clear that his pathetic insult wasn’t going to silence her or anyone she knows.
“The women I’m surrounded by, my family, my friends, my colleagues are all strong, confident women, women who are sure of themselves,” Bennett declared. “They didn’t get offended by this.”
Bennett now “plans to focus on economic development issues, noting the need to help lower- and fixed-income residents who may be struggling to keep their homes and the thousands of people left unemployed as some Atlantic City casinos closed,” NBC reports.
Last January, dozens of women showed up at freeholder meeting to confront Carman. One brought a box of macaroni and cheese and told Carman to “cook his own damn dinner.”
Thanks to Bennett, he’ll have plenty of time to do so.
