Congress: Mueller must testify after ‘staggering partisan’ cover-up
House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) asked special counsel Robert Mueller to testify before May 23.
The public may finally hear from special counsel Robert Mueller, after House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler sent a letter requesting Mueller testify on the explosive Russia investigation before May 23.
“It is clear Congress and the American people must hear from Special Counsel Robert Mueller in person to better understand his findings,” Nadler tweeted Thursday morning, attaching the letter requesting Mueller’s testimony to the tweet. “We are now requesting Mueller to appear before @HouseJudiciary as soon as possible.”
Mueller has become an almost mythical figure, not uttering a single peep during his nearly two-year-long inquiry into the Trump campaign’s possible collusion with Russia, as well as Trump’s obstruction of justice.
And the public still hasn’t heard from him even a month after he submitted his final report to Attorney General William Barr — who took it upon himself to speak for Mueller during a shameful “news” conference Thursday morning prior to the report’s release.
Though Congress has still not seen the report, there are a lot of questions members likely have for Mueller, including why he chose not to make a conclusion on whether Trump obstructed justice, and whether he truly believes Trump fully cooperated with his investigation, which Barr ridiculously claimed on Thursday.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is fully onboard with having Mueller testify.
“AG Barr has confirmed the staggering partisan effort by the Trump Admin to spin public’s view of the #MuellerReport – complete with acknowledgment that the Trump team received a sneak preview,” Pelosi tweeted Thursday. “It’s more urgent than ever that Special Counsel Mueller testify before Congress.”
And Barr, during his disgraceful “news” conference, said he didn’t have objections to Mueller’s testimony — though it’s unclear whether Mueller even needs Barr’s sign off in the first place.
So, we may finally hear from Mueller in the coming days.
And unfortunately for the White House, that means this story isn’t going away anytime soon.
