Parkland dad rips Texas lt. gov. over guns: 'Idiotic' and 'a crock'
Fred Guttenberg, whose daughter was killed in the Parkland school shooting, said Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick ‘should be removed from office’ over his ‘moronic’ comments about guns.

Texas Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick tried to blame everything under the sun for the gun massacre at Santa Fe High School. He went so far as to pointedly declare, “It’s not about the guns, it’s about us.” But Parkland dad Fred Guttenberg smacked that absurd rhetoric down.
Immediately following Patrick’s interview, host George Stephanopoulos got a fiery rebuttal from Guttenberg, whose daughter Jaime was killed during February’s massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida.
“I think those are the most idiotic comments I’ve ever heard regarding gun safety,” Guttenberg said. “Let me be clear, he should be removed from office for his failure to want to protect the citizens of Texas. To hear him continue to make the argument, after 10 people died in his state, that guns are not the issue is simply a crock.”
“I’m sorry, that man, those were idiotic comments, I am raging right now,” he added. “I’m here this weekend at what was supposed to be my daughter’s dance recital, where they’re honoring my daughter’s memory instead of having my daughter dance.”
He declared that for Patrick “to make those moronic comments [was] unacceptable.”
Guttenberg also talked about protesting the NRA convention, where a gun that resembles a cell phone was a “featured product.”
“I am pretty confident the framers of our constitution did not sit around predicting the day where we would have guns that looked like cell phones,” he said.
Since the Parkland shooting, Guttenberg has been calling out NRA shills like Patrick. His activism, and that of so many others, has led to a sustained movement, the political sway of which only continues to grow in power and scope.
Republicans are making an awfully big bet that the “Never Again” movement will fizzle out by November. But people like Fred Guttenberg and the survivors of these wholly preventable tragedies simply won’t allow it.
