Trump dodges reporters as he flees town after damning Mueller report
Trump has nothing to say about the Mueller report now that people have seen how bad it actually is for him.
Trump wasn’t eager to talk to reporters Thursday afternoon, after the release of the redacted version of the Mueller report showing significant evidence of Trump’s attempts to obstruct justice.
White House adviser Kellyanne Conway had said earlier in the day that Trump would likely address reporters on his way to Mar-a-Lago for a long weekend.
Instead of addressing the crowd of reporters on the White House lawn, as he often does on his way to his various resorts, Trump left town without a word.
The turnaround comes after weeks of Trump falsely claiming that the Mueller report was a “total exoneration” on matters of collusion and obstruction. While his attorney general, William Barr, hid the full Mueller report from the public and from Congress, Trump relied on Barr’s false assurances that the report exonerated him.
But even a redacted version of the Mueller report reveals damning evidence of Trump’s multiple attempts to obstruct justice, including attempts to pressure members of his administration to end the investigation into his alleged activities with Russia.
And the report also exposes Trump’s staff and family for their shady behavior.
Press secretary Sarah Sanders was forced to admit that she lied to the press after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey. And the Mueller team exposed Trump’s daughter Ivanka was involved in the effort to cover up the infamous meeting with Russians at Trump Tower in the summer of 2016 to gain dirt on Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
White House reporter Eli Stokols said Trump’s avoidance of reporters Thursday “he has few good answers for questions about all the specific and unflattering revelations in it.”
After weeks of insisting the Mueller report — which Trump had not seen — was good news for him, he is suddenly faced with the reality of his misdeeds laid out for all to read.
And the bravado he was exhibiting as recently as Thursday morning, before the report was released, has apparently disappeared.
