Majority of Americans worry about foreign interference in elections as Trump invites it
A solid majority of Americans are concerned about foreign interference in our elections, but you’d never know it from the way Trump acts.
Americans are incredibly worried about foreign interference in our elections. Too bad Trump doesn’t care.
An overwhelming majority of Americans — 63% — say that they are very concerned about some form of foreign interference in the 2020 presidential election. That interference could take the form of tampering with results, of candidates or voters being improperly influenced, of critical information being stolen from candidates or parties, or of hacking the election itself.
It’s no surprise that Americans are concerned, given that special counsel Robert Mueller already concluded that the Russians interfered in the 2016 election. Though Trump has insisted that the report also cleared him of conspiring with Russia, only 24% of people surveyed by AP/NORC believe that.
The news for Trump is no better when people were asked about obstruction of justice. Only 20% of Americans think that the report exonerated Trump, while fully 48% disagree.
This poll was taken after Trump went on national television and declared that he’d happily collude with foreign countries to win another term. He’s displayed no remorse for that statement, even doubling down on Twitter the following day and tried to compare a state meeting with the Queen of England to getting dirt on his opponents from a hostile foreign power.
With that, it’s no wonder that Americans are so concerned about foreign interference. They have every reason to be.
And it isn’t just Trump that is the problem. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and the rest of the GOP are refusing even to consider bills that could help make elections more secure. And then there’s the fact that members of the GOP are more than happy to say that Trump’s willingness to collude yet again is perfectly acceptable.
There’s one last bit of bad news for Trump in this poll: He just can’t break a 40% approval rating. AP/NORC found that only 38% of Americans think Trump is good at his job.
Though the GOP tries to provide cover for Trump’s incompetence and his obvious willingness to betray his country to win an election, Americans know the truth.
