Trump freaks out after learning how much his staff disobeys his orders
Trump insists that ‘nobody’ disobeys his orders — but the Mueller report says otherwise.
Trump is scrambling to save face after special counsel Robert Mueller’s redacted report gave numerous examples of White House staff blatantly disobeying Trump’s orders when he told them to obstruct justice.
“Are you worried that your staff is ignoring your orders as the Mueller report portrays?” a reporter asked Trump Monday, during the annual White House Easter Egg Roll.
“Nobody disobeys my orders,” Trump blustered.
But Mueller’s report tells a very different story of Trump’s first two years in office.
In early 2017, Trump tried to convince his director of national intelligence, Dan Coats, to shut down the FBI’s investigation into the Trump campaign’s possible collusion with Russia. As the Mueller report states, Coats “made it clear that he would not get involved with an ongoing FBI investigation,”
Later in 2017, Trump instructed his White House counsel, Don McGahn, to fire Mueller. McGahn refused, telling one colleague he was going to quit because Trump was asking him to do “crazy shit.”
Over and over again, Mueller’s investigation found, Trump’s staff refused to carry out his orders to obstruct justice.
“The President’s efforts to influence the investigation were mostly unsuccessful, but that is largely because the persons who surrounded the President declined to carry out orders or accede to his requests,” the report states.
Trump spent weeks praising the Mueller report and falsely claiming that it exonerated him. But once the actual report came out and made clear that Trump was very much not exonerated, Trump quickly changed his tune — and retreated to his safe space of Fox News and Twitter to soothe himself.
In the aftermath of the Mueller report, Trump even avoided reporters so he wouldn’t have to answer questions about all the potential crimes outlined in it.
Trump can lie and soothe his bruised ego all he wants — but he can’t change the truth about what the Mueller report says.
