GOP shamed with chants of 'USA!' for refusing to protect our elections
Democrats shamed Republicans on the House floor with chants of ‘USA!’ when the GOP voted against protecting our elections from Russia.
The House GOP was shamed by Democrats chanting “USA! USA!” after they voted down a measure to protect American elections from foreign interference.
Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL) introduced a measure to designate additional funding to states to be able to protect our elections.
The initiative came after Trump’s decision to stand with Vladimir Putin instead of American intelligence agencies that have repeatedly stated Russia interfered in the 2016 election on Trump’s behalf — and that Russia is actively targeting future elections as well.
Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) spoke in favor of Quigley’s proposal. The federal government should stand with states “to slam the door in the face of the Russian bear or any other adversary who seeks to steal the integrity of our elections,” he said.
Comparing the assault on American elections to the 9/11 terrorist attack, Hoyer said there was a “flashing red light” being ignored about threats to the vote now.
“Surely we can rise above pandering to party and Putin to act on behalf of our freedom and our security,” he added.
“We have sworn an oath to defend our Constitution and our liberty against all enemies, foreign and domestic. You have the opportunity to do that today. Do so. Vote yes on this amendment for your country.”
Cheering then broke out on the floor of the House, followed by a chant of “USA! USA! USA!”
Congressional reporter Chad Pergram noted “most GOPers don’t join in.”
The measure was defeated by a vote of 182-232.
Republicans have consistently refused to support measures securing elections.
Soon after Trump was sworn in, they voted to eliminate the Election Assistance Commission, which worked to secure voting machines from hacking.
While the commission remained in place, Speaker Paul Ryan engineered the ouster of the organization’s then-leader. His spokesperson said the move was part of a strategy to “choose our own folks” instead of someone who was well-liked by state election officials.
In the same week that Trump made clear that he would stand with Russia over his own country, congressional Republicans refused to do everything in their power to stop bad actors from breaking into American electoral networks.
And they did it as chants of “USA!” echoed in their ears.
