Watch: GOP congressman says 'attractive children' not making it to border
A Republican congressman lamented that ‘attractive children’ aren’t making it to the U.S.-Mexico border, in the latest in a string of anti-immigrant comments from Republican officials.

Rep. John Carter of Texas, a vehemently anti-immigration Republican, complained Thursday that “a lot of the attractive children are not making it to the border.”
Carter made the bizarre comment in a hearing about immigration and U.S. border agencies.
After he spoke, the hearing room was silent, an awkward response to the strange language he decided to use.

Carter has a track record of extreme hostility to immigrants through his career.
Carter supports Trump’s nonsensical idea of a wall on the southern border. He also backed the anti-immigrant “Minuteman Project,” which posted nativist, often armed, “volunteers” on the border to watch for anyone they suspected of being an undocumented immigrant.
He supports reporting undocumented immigrants who receive hospital treatment.
He even supports getting rid of birthright citizenship, which automatically recognizes the citizenship of people born on American soil, established under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. In fact, he co-sponsored a bill to specifically exclude the children of undocumented immigrants from that right.
Carter received a 100 percent rating from the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), designated ahate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
The skin-crawling episode is the latest chapter in ongoing Republican hostility toward immigrants and immigrant families.
When Trump launched his presidential campaign, he fumed, “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best.” Now his fellow Republican has invoked “attractive children.”
The GOP has firmly positioned itself as anti-immigrant, backing legislation that cruelly rips families apart. Now through figures like Carter, the party embraces a mindset that complains about “attractive children” in the context of immigration.
