America wakes up to another mass shooting: At least 12 are dead
It’s the 307th mass shooting in the United States this year.
Less than two weeks after a gunman walked into a Pittsburgh synagogue and shot 11 Jews dead, America is waking up to another mass shooting, this time in Thousand Oaks, California.
Shots were reported at the Borderline Bar and Grill, which was hosting its regular weekly college night, just after 11 p.m. Wednesday.
Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean called it a “tragic, tragic situation.”
At least 12 are reported dead, including Sgt. Ron Helus, who arrived at the bar shortly after shots were reported. He was shot multiple times, according to Dean. He was a 29-year police veteran who planned to retire next year.
The suspect, who has not yet been identified, was also shot dead.
All of the other victims are reportedly between the ages of 19-25 years old, according to Dean. At least another 10 people are injured.
On Thursday morning, Trump tweeted that he had been “fully briefed” on the situation and thanked law enforcement. Unlike the last deadly mass shooting, he did not suggest the victims were at fault for failing to have “protection” at the bar.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, the shooting in Thousand Oaks is the 307th this year in the United States and the second deadliest, after the February shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where 17 people, including 14 students, were killed.
